shutdown warning

Written on November 27, 2007

so yesterday morning from about 3am till 7am my rr was down, and blocked. turns out that i seem to have gotten a nasty virus on my network. course, i didn’t find that out till after i talked with rr. (and made it to work on time)

the $500 question is (quite literally, i’ll explain later) is which bloody system is it on? the linux server, doubtful (scan was clean). my desktop? maybe, but the scan logs were clear and the definitions up to date. my wife’s computer? probably, but again… logs show no infections and the definitions are up to date. my powerbook? its a mac, who gets a virus on a mac?!? the system i’m cleaning for heather? nope, its a fresh install, scanned it anyway, all clear. the ‘problem system’ that got a friends network shut down? possibly but it was cleaned up the week prior to my getting cut of and has been clean since (i’m checking the hell out of it anyway).

so far everything is coming up roses. I did find a virus on my mac… on the diablo2 install. nestled in /Games/Diablo II/Diablo II Movies was the culprit. exploit.html.ascii is what clamav found. a necessary 400+Mb file for one of my fave games which i’m going to have to reinstall at some point. its primarily a windows based virus from what i could find out, but i was playing over battlenet (gateway east) the night prior to getting cut off. I was also running a p2p client that had throttled my download/upload rate to a max of 10kb/s.

i’m still not sure which system is at fault. i only hope that i’ve got it nailed down. if not, its going to cost $100 per computer, depending on where i go, to get a professional receipt saying that the systems have a clean bill of health.

as if this year hasn’t been exciting enough, right?

the violation was actually logged on the 21st. roughly when i plugged in the computer to be cleaned. due to a backlog in processing, my rr account wasn’t shut down until the 27th. This takes a HUGE load off my mind.

Thanks to Jay for helping me gather more information on this.
