yet another beta

earlier this week google.com release Google Chrome (BETA) for Windows. (Note: beta? really guys? you could get away with calling it an opensource STABLE release) They (google) says they’ve got a mac and linux version in the works, but those platforms are always second (sometimes third, forth or Sir Fiddle Not Appearing on this platform) fiddle in googles eyes. even for as much as they seem to be in favor of opensource.

I really wouldn’t be surprised if instead of working on their own linux/mac builds, they were really working with the webkit/safari and konqueror teams to have them implement their v8 and tab handling code. as all of these project revolve around webkit, i don’t see this being too far fetched.

I’ve played around with google chrome at work, being that i’m a mac user at home. so far, i’m impressed. the tab handling is superb and each tab having its own process helps keep the browser nice and fast. the built in task manager has also been a boon, letting me know which pages are using the most memory/process/net traffic at any given moment. my only gripes are the lack of java support. javascript, flash, shockwave, all work well, but java is necessary for some sites at work and for some schools online courses. the other is the bookmark handling. I shouldn’t have imported all of my bookmarks in at once as i used firefox’s tags instead of actual folders for organization. so now i’ve got a bunch of unorganized bookmarks and have to use googles built in search to see if i’m pulling up the right one.

googles comic for the introduction of google chrome

i do recommend giving google chrome a shot. all it all, its pretty good.
